Sheesh. I put Tefillin on each day and it is easy to forget that not everyone knows what Tefillin are.

I sort of agree with you. All religions have their extreme components and I think religion has been the cause of wars time and again. Islam is not only a religion but an ideology, a dangerous one. It takes top honors these days. I am no religious expert but it seems to me that while Judaism and Christianity has progressed, islam has regressed to it most base. PS no bombs are good bombs, no terrorists are good, and NONE should be referred to as "freedom fighters"

Ok so we can't allow bombs on planes but we can allow them in abortion clinics? Are christian bombs the "good" bombs? I support you on Islam being a vile religion, but so is christianity for pretty much the same reasons. All religion has all the same problems.

Lagolop Says:
No, the only reason we have bombs on planes is because of islam, a cult of violent, hatred and death.

I'm sure standard TSA guidelines mention tefillin. Second of all, he left from New York City's LaGuardia. In case your not aware, New York City has the highest concentration of Jews in the country, making up around 20% of the city's population. Orthodox Jewish men will always bring their tefilin with them when going on a flight, as they must don them everyday except for the Sabbath. I am sure the TSA agents at LAGuardia are quite familiar with what 2 by 2 leather boxes are.

That's kind of funny. I looked up Tefillin on google images, and I can see how the flight crew might have been alarmed. It looks like some sort of modern cube weapon. lol. I bet they were embarrassed once they found out what it was.

Tefillin are very small. Less than a 2 inch cube. It would be much easier to use the souls of your shoes, a digital camera, a cellphone, a laptop, or myriad other devices. What we need to do is have good detection for chemical residue of explosives as part of our screening. We all need to stop being afraid to use ethnic profiling.

I am a religious, Orthodox Jew. We wear tefillin every day during our morning prayers. They are leather boxes which contain parchments with Biblical verses on them. This ritual is over 3,000 years old. We wear one on the head to symbolize devoting our intellect to serving God, and one on the left arm (ajacent to the left side of the chest, where the heart is). This symbolizes devoting our actions (arm) and emotions (heart) to God. I have no problem with what the airline or police did.

Dude did NOT get screened... Not that the screeners would have caught powder in his drawls. But he was escorted right onto the plane... past security.

@AvatarMarxon90 LOL you think christians are not that crazy? They bomb abortion clinics. The world is a dangerous place because of religion. We should respect al-Quaeda, if we are to respect religions.

That's exactly what the rag-heads are attempting to do; make professional people act stupidly. If people stop flying it won't be due to terrorist, it will be due to all the f&*king security BS and stupid flight crews like this one.

xtlhogciao Says:
You'd figure the flight attendants would have basic training on non christian prayer rituals. The security obviously has training on how to "randomly" check a "brown" person. I took a train to Chicago for a Cubs game a couple of years ago and a woman was shouting at the devil the entire time. Screaming at him or it in the empty(for obvious reasons) seat next to her. We didn't stop for that. That's a lot weirder. Still the most fun train ride I've ever had.

i saw a guy using a tefflin, i thought he was casting a spell. it was the coolest thing i had ever seen.

Tom Kennedy Says:
Thanks for the anti-islam rant, but this had nothing to do with islam. Praying with the tefflin is a JEWISH religious rite. I'm not a religious person at all, but come on folks, haven't we all seen devout jewish people on TV or in movies, with these little boxes tied to their heads? Doesn't the airline have ANY diversity training, to prepare the ignorant flight attendant on the use of phylacteries? Well, they will now.

David Sousa Says:
Or better said, the only reason we have bombs on planes is because of fanatical and extremist Islamic groups. You don't see other religions doing it, so you can't generalize (once again). The Germans are all guilty because of the terrors made by only a part of its population during World War 2? Definately no.

This reminds me of when my husband and I were on the Eurostar to London. My husband went to the area (on the train) where the luggage is stored to pray, an English couple sitting near me peered down the train & saw him putting his Teffillin on & I heard the wife say to the husband "I wonder what he's doing" he answers "I think he's praying bc they're Jewish" to which she says "no they're not, I heard them talking English"!!

rubin24 Says:
Also, Jews don't "need" Tefillin to pray. Jews wear the Tefillin only because it is a distinct commandment in the Torah which has been observed for thousands of years irrespective of prayer. Tefillin are almost exclusively worn during the morning service on Sunday-Friday. Very few put them on during afternoon service and they are not to be worn during the evening service. They are not worn on Sabbath or or on holidays such as Yom Kippur (which is associated with prayer/repentance) .
