The turbocharger for a diesel engine was introduced in 1905 many years after the first functional diesel engine which was created in 1983.

MrTpengineer... Since the ignition shuts off the injection pump, wouldnt shutting off the ignition cut the engine off, stopping the flow of fuel to the injectors? If this is the case then i wouldnt call a situation like that a runaway.

damn that waste gate on that first chevy was insane!!!

Now the owner knows to run more fuel next time hehe :)
Feb 2, 2013 MrTpengineer Says:
Not nessesarily, hot injectors can stick open from long pulls or a seal could have given way and the oil leaked into the cylinders. Loads of different things could have happened...

I can't believe I just found this video. I sure miss that truck I never should of sold it. 1985 f250 with a 6.9 4speed
Feb 2, 2013 GhostRiot Says:
The only way to stop a runaway diesel is by choking the intake, cutting the fuel is irrelevant because the engine has begun running on its own engine oil, whether from blowby, oil seal on the turbo or leaking from the guides/HG.. the question is, do you know what a real runaway is?
Feb 1, 2013 K5T9M4 Says:
mrplowjrezv is right, you dont need a turbo to run away, although many idi's had turbo kits put on aftermarket, there are at least 3 different manufactured kits by reputable companies. Bad piston rings, valve guide seals, really just about any seal that keeps oil out of the combustion chamber can cause a runaway.

completely forgot about the add-on turbos....good point!
Jan 16, 2013 DrMcelroy Says:
@David Terrell... Ive had 2 6.9's and several 7.3idi engines with turbos, just because it didnt come factory with a turbo doesnt mean you cant put one on it. 7.3 idi's came factory with turbos as early as 93.5, and did so up until the first Powerstroke engine came out the next year
